I’m an experienced executive specialized in scaling-up businesses, both as a C-level executive, as a management consultant and as an investment manager, in addition to board memberships. I have a successful record of growing companies based on conceiving powerful business strategies, recruiting and managing high performance teams, structuring and aligning business processes to ensure excellent operational execution. Repeated success in growing businesses in various capacities: partner of a private equity group, founder and Executive Chairman of a healthcare services company, co-founder and COO/CFO of a medical services company, partner of a management consulting company, founder and managing partner of a hedge fund, CEO of a trading company.
Strong background in healthcare sector, having started healthcare investing for a private equity fund, and creating one of the ten largest physical therapy networks in the US in less than two years, leading it as Executive Chairman from one clinic location to over 150 in less than two years. Previously had co-founded an innovative medical services company in the area of regenerative medicine, and led it as COO/CFO from inception until its sale to a larger healthcare group.
Experience in technology sector includes executive management and consulting to companies seeking to accelerate growth. I have consulted to companies in artificial intelligence, transaction processing and telecommunications sectors. As a “strategic” CFO of a software company I have restructured that company’s balance sheet and repositioned the business for improved profitability in face of declining revenues, and led its M&A activities. I have also served on the board of directors of a communications network company, ultimately sold to Comcast.
Experienced in direct investing as a partner scaling up the operations of a private equity group during a phase of fast growth with assets under management trebling to almost $2 billion in two years. Chaired its investment committee, promoted improvements in the investment selection, due diligence and asset management processes and built a high performance team.
As CEO grew a trading company out of losing money to profitability, with a substantial return on capital employed during the second year of my tenure.
After my MBA at Harvard Business School Joined Monitor Group, a management consulting and investment firm founded by Prof. Michael Porter and others from HBS and Bain & Company. Joined the firm’s Boston office when the firm had about 30 professionals in two offices, and helped grow it over two decades until reaching 1,500 professionals in 30 offices around the world, becoming an influential force in the corporate world, advising clients on competitive issues, restructurings and growth strategies.
While a consultant at Monitor I developed and managed client accounts and consulting teams engaged in assignments in North America across a variety of industries including banking and other financial services, gaming, transaction processing, telecommunications and government services, having earlier consulted in manufacturing, oil and chemicals and steel industry sectors. Worked closely with the top management of client companies, both on long range strategic planning and on shorter term business corrections or turnarounds. Experience included working as the virtual CFO of a publicly traded company with dominant market share in its technology niche. Had progressively growing internal management responsibilities at Monitor, worked at the Toronto office and founded the Sao Paulo office. Recruited and developed the Latin American consulting team and managed the region for Monitor. Directed Monitor’s recruiting function worldwide and initiated and led negotiations for Monitor in several M&A opportunities.
Contributed significantly to the development of Monitor’s investment division, co-founding Monitor Asset Management, and its affiliated hedge funds. As portfolio manager of these equity long/short funds achieved investment performance well in excess of the S&P benchmarks over a period of eight years. In addition developed Monitor’s activities in private equity, particularly in Brazil and China. Specifically in Brazil through an affiliate Angra Partners managed a $1 billion + infrastructure fund that controlled assets such as Brasil Telecom and the subway system of Rio de Janeiro. That fund was troubled before Angra Partners took over the investment mandate, and ended up with successful retunrs for its investors, a selected number of the largest pension funds in Latin America.
I studied Production Engineering at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and obtained an MBA at Harvard Business School. My first job out of college was at Shell Oil in Brazil, where I was in charge of Lubricants costing and pricing, before moving to Boston to study for my MBA.
